Yes, of course it can be done. The best people to do it are those that are offering an environmentally safe conversion operation. A Google search will pay dividends and is highly recommended. Try starting by contacting the compressor manufacturer for advice.

Why do you want to do this, since R22 is still avaliable and will be for the foreseeable future. There are steps to follow when changing refrigerants. R134A will effect the capacity in a negative way. I would review the necessity of this change before proceeding.

R-22 and R-134 use different oil, so R-134 is not a "drop-in" replacement for R-22. In addition, R-134 is in a different pressure/temperature 'class', and will not work in a system with a compressor designed for R-22.

There are refrigerants considered by to be more environmentally friendly than R-22, but when I compare the ODP and GWP I really fail to see that R-22 replacements are all that much better (or less bad).

If someone wants to quantify the difference, I would like to see such calculations.

However, very powerful and influential people, who just may now wish to destroy me for questioning their wisdom, have determined that R-22 must go. It reminds of the warning labels seen so often: "This compound is known to be carcinogenic by the State of California". Fortunately, as previously said, R-22 will be around for a quite while,

No replacement refrigerant that has come down the road has ever been less expensive.

There are other ozone freindly options for R22. ISCEON is HFC based and easy to change. If you have any more query please feel free to contact me

My views have changed since this string was began.

But you wouldn't want to use R-134 for residential or commercial air conditioning - maybe R-404a. I have retrofitted R-404a in commercial refrigeration units successfully.

You will have to change the compressor and the expansion valve or capillary tube plus a few other accessory items.

Actually, R-134 is a pretty "unhandy" refrigerant to use, considering the low pressures it runs at, and it seems to plug up capillary tubes.

I really like R-410, but it has not shown up in commercial refrigeration in my experience. R-410 is nice because of the high pressures and the good oil return. However, I would not recommend retrofitting R-410 in anything.
