How Nanosensors Work

01/14/2011 8:33 AM

A publication describes nanosensors (conductive or semiconductive particles) dispersed in an polymer may provide information (pressure, temperature, humidity, ph etc) in downhole oilfield operations. My inquiry is how nanosensors work to gather data ?

Might we read that publication?

When a force acts on them, they produce a small current.

Concerning pressure, conductive nanoparticles dispersed in a polymer matrix present a pressure threshold at the said percolation limit, where the whole becomes conductive, whereas it is an insulator below the percolation threshold. This may be related to fractal dimension. Percolative thresholds are known since a long time in biphased liquid dielectrics, for example for terpenes in water.at the percolation threshold, the variation of dielectric permittivity versus temperature is very sharp. These compositions display often hysteresis, the threshold being not the same when the parameter increases, or when it decreases.
