Instrumentation Junction Box

Dear All

I am the Diesel power Plant project, I have to install Instrumentain junction box in the zone 2 area, the instruments are Exd certified. here we dont have Exd certified SS 316 jn box. My question is shall i use Exe, (Increased safety) junction box instead of Exd jucntion box, Kinldly advise me.

Yes, provided it is mounted either in zone 1, zone 2 or the safe area and the connections inside it are made in accordance with the requirements of EEx e.

Why is there a zone 2 flammable area and a diesel engine in close proximity?

The inference is that from time to time under abnormal operation (the definition of zone 2) there will be a potentially explosive atmosphere present. The sources of ignition are the hot cylinder heads and exhaust manifold of the diesel engine, and the risk of sucking this explosive atmosphere into the engine's air intake, which will overcome the speed regulation mechanism with the risk of the thing overspeeding itself to catastrophic self-disassembly.

No EEx e junction box is going to stop that!

Zone-2 and diesel generator are 130M apart, and it is in non-classified area.

Hi there The short answer is yes you can use that equipment. I attach a summery of Ex protection methods for use in Zoned areas including Zone 2: This is from our local Guide and relates to equipment conforming to the IEC 60079 series. 8 Selection of explosion protected equipment 8.1 General Electrical equipment (and also mechanical equipment that is a source of ignition) selected for use in an explosive atmosphere shall have been certified by a test laboratory as suitable for use in the explosive atmosphere present in the hazardous location concerned. The use of electrical and mechanical equipment and installations in hazardous locations is subject to the requirements of the relevant statutory regulations. NOTE Approval for such use might be obtained from organizations such as insurance companies. 8.2 Equipment for use in explosive gas atmospheres 8.2.1 Selection criteria The main criteria for the selection of explosion protected equipment for use in explosive gas atmospheres are: a) choosing equipment that is suitably explosion protected for the hazardous location (zone); b) ensuring that the surface temperature or temperature class of the equipment is suitable for the worst case temperature class or ignition temperature of the gas or vapour involved; c) ensuring that the gas group or where applicable subgroup or approved gases for the equipment is suitable for the worst-case gas or vapour involved; and d) ensuring that the equipment is suitable for the external conditions and the ambient temperature in the area. Electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres is intended for use in an ambient temperature within the range –20 °C to +40 °C, unless marked accordingly. Where electrical equipment may be subjected to external influences for which it has not been designed (e.g. chemical, mechanical and thermal stresses) it shall be additionally protected. 8.2.2.1 Zone 0 locations Electrical equipment selected for use in a zone 0 location shall be intrinsically safe electrical equipment of category "ia" (Ex ia equipment) or double-protected equipment. NOTE Explosion protected equipment for zone 0 locations is called Category 1 equipment in the ATEX Directive (Directive 94/9/EC) of the European Union. 8.2.2.2 Zone 1 locations Electrical equipment selected for use in a zone 1 location shall be limited to zone 0 equipment or one of, or a combination of, the following types: a) flameproof (Ex d); b) specially protected (Ex s); c) increased safety (Ex e); d) encapsulated (Ex m); e) powder-filled or sand-filled (Ex q); f) intrinsically safe (Ex ib); and g) pressurized (Ex p) equipment that has interlocks that isolate it automatically when the fresh-air supply or inert gas supply fails. Increased safety (Ex e) motors and generators used in zone 1 locations shall have overload protective devices approved by a test laboratory. NOTE 2 Explosion protected equipment for zone 1 locations is called Category 2 equipment in the ATEX Directive (Directive 94/9/EC) of the European Union. 8.2.2.3 Zone 2 locations Electrical equipment used in zone 2 locations shall be of a type permissible for zone 1 locations, or shall be of one of the following types: a) Type "n"; or b) pressurized (Ex p) equipment that has visual or audible warning systems to indicate failure of the fresh-air supply or inert gas supply. NOTE Explosion protected equipment for zone 2 locations is called Category 3 equipment in the ATEX Directive (Directive 94/9/EC) of the European Union. 8.2.3 Selection according to the ignition temperature of the gas or vapour The electrical equipment shall be so selected that its maximum surface temperature will not reach the ignition temperature of any gas or vapour which may be present.
