VCB Switching Rod Problem

01/17/2011 2:11 AM

We are using 33 KV Siemens made (3AF) breakers for furnace rectifier taransformer.Problem is switching rod of breaker some time get broken and vacuum bottle of that perticular phase fails to open/trip and because of that surge arrestor of other phase blowns itself. E.g. if rod of 'R' phase fails, 'B' phase surge arrestor fails.

How can I prevent that heavy surge in system? Why the surge is such hight that S.A. is not able to withstand?

Please contact Siemens before they lock out the firm.

I have always used another brand of VCB units. Never in the 40 plus years have I seen one do as you have described. They do wear at contacts and linkage areas but not without good notice of pending replacement. I would suggest getting Siemens in to have a look at issue and see if they can resolve. Might be an operational or installation issue with the units.

As fititorelse says, get the original fault sorted out first. It seems strange to me that your just prepaired to accept a VCB failing.
