Generator Breaker

01/17/2011 1:50 AM

Please kindly advise the reason why not install the generator breaker for steam turbine Generator in CCPP power plant while Gas turbine generator has his own breaker(52G).

Station power is supplied from Aux. transformer which locates between Gas turbine generator and it's step-up transfomer.

Thanks,

Common Generator + Transformer overall differential protection (87GT) is economical and is very commonly applied thereby a generator CB is purposeless.

Generator CB is manufactured by a few manufacturers and is very expensive.

Since the Aux Transformer is there with the Gas Turbine the designer had no choice but to provide individual differential protections for the generator as well as main transformer, while the generator CB has been installed to cover for short circuit faults in station power supplies link.

I once worked in a remote fish plant with a 5-genset powerhouse. The gensets were connected to the bus via CBs in the switchboard. There was a short circuit in the wiring between one genset and its CB. There was lots of "magic smoke" as the engine bogged down trying to feed this fault, which also smoked one vertical section of the switchboard and browned out my refrigeration system. Within a day, our electrician cleaned out all the residues with Boraxo, and wired in a spare genset we had.

One might think that mounting the CB on the genset itself would have prevented that, but then the fault would have been fed from the bus side, which could have been worse. Vibration might also be an issue for genset-mounted CBs, which may be a reason for not having CBs on both ends.
