It seals off around the circumference of the impeller, which is mounted on an eccentric shaft. This makes an effect like that of a vane pump. The water also does some cooling. BTW, it's "vacuum", not "vaccum", "vaccume", or "vacume".

Hi Tornado: Where do these kind of questions come from? By the way, there could be several additional ways to spell vacuum.
