Liquid Level Monitor

Guys, how can i get or design a circuit that can detect level at different set points for a mud like semi fluid mixed wuth tiny solids in a metalcontainer 3ft diameter, snd 12 feet high and can translate the different level set pints probably with leds? thx

This looks like a candidate for an ultrasonic or radar sensor, mounted above and aimed down at the level to be detected. It can be calibrated into a 4-20ma loop that many kinds of microprocessor or PLC can handle, including multiple actions at various levels of the slurry.

Gave you a GA, but we could probably add load cells under the tank as a third option.

I agree, another good plan. I haven't ever set up one of those, and would wonder if there would need to be flexible piping connections.

GA.

We have used Greyline doppler level controllers with very good results. With 4-20 mA output, variable levels are readily controlled or monitored. These doppler level controllers were/are our preferred method of controlling levels in large water cisterns.

Install a closed top, open bottom tube into the tank reaching from the top of the tank to about 25mm from base. Mount a pressure sensor in the top of the tube. The pressure in the tube is in direct relationship to the level in the tank. You can use the sensor output to read off an analogue or digital readout, or use a series of differential amplifiers to trigger set points for LEDs. There are cheap scalable digital readouts available so that you can have your reading in feet, metres, litres or Kgs. Select the diameter of the tube based on the viscosity of the mud. For bitumen I use a 100mm dia. tube. In commercial oil storage tanks it is usually about 50mm dia.

Sounds like a perfect application for a Liquid Level Sensing Probe, they are very reliable in sludge, no problems with foam or false echoes off tank parts as ultrasonics have. You can couple that with an Indicator Controller to get an LED display with relay outputs and 4-20mA, or other controllers for more advanced Pump Management. MultiTrode sell world-wide, with primary offices in Australia, USA and UK. Contact details on the web site or contact me directly if you like.

Use Ultrasonics above the tank, The Flowline brand is very easy to use and very reliable. Aside from that, they are very easy to program as they come with a USB stick that wires to the meter and lets you easily set the setpoints. They may even offer one or two that have built in transmitters so you can pick them up remotely. No I'm not a Flowline rep, just familiar with their products.
