Modal Analysis of a CAD Model

01/24/2011 11:35 PM

hello all,

I am working on CAD model of a test fixture. some parts of it are welded and some are attached by bolts (in order to make it modular).

we want to give this model to CAE expert, to find out its natural frequency and strain energy density plot.

As I am a student and not an exeperienced person , I am confuse about few things:

1. how to specify weld location and its properties? is there any standard format?

2. how to specify location of bolting?

3. we have different combinations of attachments. is it then required to carry out analysis for all combinations?

4. Test fixture will be attached to base plate by number of bolts. how to specify this boundary constrain?

I am really confuse. I may be on the right direction. but I am not sure about it.

please help.

Instead of trying to work out the design alone, why not contact your CAE expert and get him/her/them involved in the design. Ask the experts if they have any suggestions they would like incorporated. You could save a lot of time and money - and grief, if you can avoid rework. You won't lose any respect by asking for guidance/verification from an expert.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Even experienced professionals ask a lot of questions, including some very basic questions sometimes. It's only a stupid question if you were afraid to ask it.
