Motor for ID Fan Application

01/24/2011 11:38 PM

Which kind of motor is most suitable for medium voltage ID Fan applications ? I have seen applicatins of Sq cage induction motor with MV VVVF drive, Slip ring induction motor & Synchronous motor. But, it appears that Synchronous motors are most popular in this field. What are the respective advantages & disadvantages ? Is it possible to replace a Synchronous motor with a Sq cage induction motor & MV VVVF drive ?

What is the ID fan for?
What KW rating?
What voltage?

Try giving some meaningful information. I've worked on over 40 types of kilns and furnaces so have seen most combinations you mention, but without knowing the situation I can't comment.

There are a number of applications. One of them is as follows- Application- Sinter Plant Head ID Fan KW rating - 4000 Voltage- 6.6 KV

Often the decision to use a Synchronous motor in that kind of application is made because the ID fan must run continuously as part of the entire plant operation and it is often one of the largest motor loads. So they use it as a synchronous condenser to help correct power factor for the rest of the plant since it is going to run anyway.
