Generator Selection - Three Phase Diesel Generator of 10KVA

01/25/2011 7:19 AM

Hi

I have a three phase diesel generator of 10KVA, what is the maximum load this generator is apable to supply. All the loads in the house are single phase and the waltage total is about 18kW, will this generator be capable of supplying power to the house?

Regards

10KVA DG normally have an efficiency of 80% and it is designed to work under 120% of its capacity so 10X.8X1.2=9.6KVA -Hit

In a word no. The wiring would be a nightmare as the loads would have to be split across the three phases to balance the loading.

Use SCADA system with a proper load shedding scheme to control the total load always less than 9KVA. BMS system also can be used. Dear Gurus, please propose a load shedding scheme.

If the generator is rated at 0.80 power factor, it can supply 8kw continuously, and maybe a bit more if intermittent.

The 18kw sounds like the total connected load, not all of which is likely to be running at once. Maybe you can find some ways to ensure that only 8kw is running at the same time. You also need to figure out how to distribute your loads among the three phases.

My personal response would be to sell this and buy a 10KW single phase 240/120 Diesel generator to run your entire house on when the utility is down. Although I can run a 3200 Sq Ft house on a 6.3KW including the washer/dryer, furnace, all lights and more importantly all our computer equipment. Stove is Gas so eating is taken care of. All lights are energy efficient too. For you to try to use the 3 phase unit. Way too much wiring involved to do so plus the disconnects. Fogetaboutit. Sell it. Go simple. KISS method

Yes, you must be VERY careful in assigning loads to each phase, PLUS having to increase the return buss size (Netural). Having bee burned, and old ee showed a easy way to just string some 100watt lights to the system to balance most of teh systems. however, the inrush current on fridges, etc played old harry with it. put it a UPS type system to then allocate the power as needed. that's how i see it.....

It depends upon the diversity factor(whether all the loads are connected at the same time)

Another solution to use the generator is to put a three phase rectifier with single phase inverter. For this power the cost would probably be higher than buying another generator.

10 kVA generator can feed 10kw unity power factor loads.

if your loads not unity power factor (.8 )for exapmle the generator can feed u by .8 *10

which is 8 kw

the other important point u have to take into your consideration a diversity factor in your housee where not all devices works at same time . for example it may be 0.6 so your maximum load will be 0.6*18=10 kw
