2" Ball Valve ANSI 900/1500 Vs. API 5M

01/25/2011 3:17 PM

All the sizes and dimensions are the same. seat and trim materials being equal. Why is the API valve 2-3 times the price of the ANSI valve?

Testing and certifications. Meeting API 6A is quite a bit harder than meeting ANSI standards and that cost gets passed along. And the chemistry of the trim might be the same, but the material condition probably is not or is uncontrolled on the ANSI valve. you must remember that an API valve is designed for a different job with different environmental factors in play than an ANSI valve which is typically for use with water or steam. If an ANSI valve fails, it usually won't kill someone, usually not true of an API valve.

Each has a different role, they are not equals. Over 900 API standards serve as the basis for API quality programs covering production material and lubricants, and certification programs for storage tanks, pressure vessels, and piping inspectors. API publish recommended practices, research reports, and specifications on pipelines, valves, offshore structures, oil-spill response procedures, environmental protection, exploration, facility management and much more. The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) establishes rules of safety governing the design, fabrication, and inspection of boilers and pressure vessels, and nuclear power plant components during constructions. The objective of the rules is to provide a margin for deterioration in service. As the voice of the U.S. standards and conformity assessment system, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) empowers its members and constituents to strengthen the U.S. marketplace position in the global economy while helping to assure the safety and health of consumers and the protection of the environment. The Institute oversees the creation, promulgation and use of thousands of norms and guidelines that directly impact businesses in nearly every sector: from acoustical devices to construction equipment, from dairy and livestock production to energy distribution, and many more. ANSI is also actively engaged in accrediting programs that assess conformance to standards – including globally-recognized cross-sector programs such as the ISO 9000 (quality) and ISO 14000 (environmental) management systems. To enhance both the global competitiveness of U.S. business and the U.S. quality of life by promoting and facilitating voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessment systems, and safeguarding their integrity.
