Current on Genset Neutral conductor

01/26/2011 1:38 AM

A genset alternator manufacturing power rating 1584kW, 400/231Volt, 2857Amps, 0.8PF, supply power in 3-phase 4-wire distribution system and suppose connected load is 100% single phase on 231Volt of a housing society, kindly let me know :

Q1 – What will be the total current on Neutral Conductor (Common)? Is there any formula to calculate the total Neutral current of any alternator? Are there different safety limits of neutral current for different rating gensets ?

Q2 – For a genset 1584kW, is there any standard for limiting the neutral current and apply any alternator protection safety warning / shutdown on over limit neutral current ?

Regards

IHH

If the load is balanced there would be no current in the neutral, the more unbalanced loading the more current through neutral. With unbalanced loading system is inefficient.

Protection relays for single phasing and unbalanced loading is not there with the transformer but it is there with the generator.

Neutral current is usually allowable up to 70% of the rated phase current.

Beyond which, it could be a sign of problem in the installation like harmonic problem which can overload the neutral.

A1 - for a single phase load the current in the neutral conductor will be equal to the current in the specific phase conductor, only flowing in the opposite direction.
