Treatment for Preventiong Heat Treated AISI410 Rusting

01/30/2011 11:58 PM

One component of SS 410 stainless steel toughened (near to get a surface hardness max of 45 HR) is found to be rusting in just a day @ salt water environment. This component is subjected to a normal food cutter environment.

Will appreciate your ideas on what chemical treatment could be done such that there would not be any change in the external dimensions.

Stainless steels in general need to be passivated after machining before exposure to corrosive environments. This is to remove iron from the surface. Some of this iron is picked up from the tools used to machine or hold the part. Passivation can be done by most surface treatment houses and is not expensive.
