Consumables For High Strain Pipeline Welding

02/01/2011 5:35 AM

Dear All,

Can somebody define High strain Pipeline Welding and why does it require much higher strength consumable than the base metal strength? For welding API 5L X60, Root pass is welded with E9016G, also why does it require Uphill progression?

Regards

I wish I had a penny for every mile of API 5L X60 that has a downhand Fleetweld 5 (6010) root pass. My father, who specialized in welding NG transmission lines 1940 to 1961, wanted a soft, ductile root pass, annealed by subsequent passes, reinforced by the cover pass. Root passes fail by cracking, minimized with lower tensile, more ductile electrodes. That's how I was taught; apparently the specifications on your project were written by someone of a different persuasion. If you are forced to use 90,000 psi yield material for the root pass, preheat and X-ray 100% for the probable root cracks. The problem should be evident when qualifying the welding procedure. Virtually all pipelines in the US were welded with 6010, 7010 downhill.

Hi,

What i understood from ur answer is that, it's not practically possible to do so, also, But is it because of High strain welding involved?

Well the Alaska pipeline (48" Japan manufactured) was welded downhand E8010-G (German electrode manufacturer

There is no requirements of E9010G for root and hot passes you can use E6010 for root and hot passes where as filling capping can be done with E7010 which gives better results in form of strength and ductility.........................
