Hot Rolled Vs Cold Rolled Plates (SS304 )

02/03/2011 7:01 PM

Can cold rolled 2B mill finish (SA240TYPE304 ) plate be used instead of hot rolled plate for a tank with the following design criteria:

Design pressure - ATM, design temperature - 100 degree celsius, shell, bottom & top cone thickness - 3 mm?

Given the information provided, yes it can. Why not? What's to stop you?

As Cold rolled plates have higher hardness is there any problem while knuckling of cone (knuckle radius 50 mm) or rolling of shell? Also the difference in mechanical properties of Hot & Cold Rolled (SA240 TYPE304) Is there any strength difference? The poor knowledge about the Hot & Cold Rolled Material is stopping me.

I don't know the answer to your question. There are a couple of people around here who can help.

2B (cold rolled) is more expensive than #1 (hot rolled). Is the better finish of 2B desired? Do you have this available in large amount and want to use it?

Number 1, 2B and 2D are all annealed.

Material is approx 12 Ga, and tank is about 20" diameter. Boiling water at atmosphere pressure. Should be OK.

Are you making a distiller?

Tanks are about Dia. 600mm to 1950 dia. (ie 24" to 77" dia) Range of working temp. is from 50 to 90 degree Celsius. As per general practice tanks manufactured in 3 mm thk with SA SA240TYPE304 HR1 material. Some of them are without insulation & cladding. But external & internal Polishing requirement is 1.45 Ra micron. To avoid polishing I was thinking to go for directly cold rolled material.

In cold rolling, the crystals get "strain free". It increases strength & hardness with good s/f finish.

In hot rolling, the recrystallisation process goes on, get high amount of ductility, great reduction in shear stress & can get favorable grain size.

It depends on what kind of operation you want to do.

AS YOUR PRODUCT IS COLD ROLLED, IT MEANS IT IS NOT BRITTLE.. BEACUSE BRITTLE METAL CAN NOT BE COLD WORKED.

AND NOW ABOUT HOT ROLLING... IT CAN BE DONE.. IF THERE IS NO SCALE FORMATION. BECAUSE IN HOT ROLLING, IT IS IN HIGH TEMPRATURE, WHICH GIVE RISE TO SCALING OF SURFACE.

AS A RESULT OF IT, S/F FINISH GET POOR. so u check ur product properties.

compare with my answer.

you will get your answer that wether it shld be hot worked or not.

THANK YOU.

Dear guest, You can safely consider using cold rolled plate instead of hot rolled for your tank design, since cold rolling has the effect of increasing the yeild strength of steel due to cold working well into the strain hardening range.

Also high strength to weight ratio is achieved in cold rolling, capable of resisting greater bending moments. This may also heip you to choose a thinner section for your application, thereby achieving some cost savings

Good Luck. Rangasamy

if you are welding the final junction, consider that the yield strength is back to the normal level in at least one point i.e. annealed due to the weld.

also that the working of the cold steel in the shop will be greater as it has a higher yield strength so you need a press with higher strength. this may not be an issue as it is "only" 3mm thick.

finally, the tooling for high strength steels is often used up quicker due to the additional hardness of the cold worked steel. again, you may only be doing a few of these tanks and so this may not be a problem.
