Generator Power Factor

02/05/2011 3:56 AM

2 generators of 400 Kw cpacity each. (Cummins engine coupled with 500kva stamford alternator)

During solo load test GEN no 1 : applied load of 25 kw noticed Pf 0.54I

But when the same load applied to GEN no2 the notced Pf is 0.23I

Note the current remains same for both generato

AVR s are interchnaged between two generators but problem still same with GEN no2.

CT ratio and voltage phase sequence are noticed to be proper.

Does any problem with the generator windings?

Generator Power factor is governed by the PF of the load.

a) it is possible that the the same load current exist but at different power factor of the load.

b) The kVAR supplied by the generator through the exciter and AVR may be different. This explains why the PF for the 2nd generator is different.

Recommendations:

a) Check the AVR and exciter for possible trouble.

b) Run a PQ analysis for further diagnostics.

In a solo load test, the inductive reactance of the genrator winding will play a major role in deciding the power factor if the load applied is very small compared to its capacity. Even a small difference in the generator reactance will show a large change in the power factor and in your case it is possible that the two generator windings are not magnetically identical. This may not be a serious problem. Why not take a trial with load of ateast 50 percent ( 200 kW) and compare the results?

We can't conclude the Power factor at 25 KW load. You have to load around 40 % to 80% of DG set capacity then verify the results.
