Reactive Power Absorption

02/07/2011 3:32 AM

good to be back,,,

dear all.. Is there the ability of generators to absorb reactive power from the system,,? as well as the generator absorbs active power from the system ... and how it affects the generator itself..?

we must keep the generator power factor as much near to be 1 as we can, to make the generator absorbe the most of the reactive power. the earthing system of the generator must be within the specification. the generator does not absorbs any active powers, the loads would do.

A generator rating is on certain pf, suppose 0.8 pf a Generator is rated at 100MW, Now MVA rating will be 125MVA, Suppose Generator is loaded at unity pf it can loaded upto 125MVA, Now suppose load pf is 0.8 lagging, in this in half cycle 25MVA will be absorbed by the load and in another cycle 25MVA will be transferred to source.Reactive load reduces the power capacity of generator by absorbing MVAR.

If Reactive load is removed Generator will be fully utilised but this can not be possible because all load consist of some reactive components.
