An acre will be plenty, no matter how crummy the ground conditions are.

Better to deput consultant and get the calculation approved by client, earthing is not a child's play, it can create a havoc if not done properly.

Hi,

Refer to query, if this matter is for the construction site building new substation, i would suggest refer back to your main contractor or the designer, ask them to issue the aprroved design before constructing anything.

Regard's

  1. Do you have a value of resistance which must be met according to a site specification?
  2. Earthing can vary from easy in a sea harbour to impossible in a bone-dry silica sand location.
  3. Executing a sound, durable earthing system is very dependent on the durability of materials and joints in initial installation and after years of corrosion.
  4. There are companies e.g. Furze in UK, who specialize in suitable equipment and design requirements - you would be well advised to consult them and buy from them.
  5. There are standards for earthing e.g. British Standard 7430.

Tornado said "An acre will be plenty, no matter how crummy the ground conditions are."

The guy is installing a 2000 kva transformer. Why would you go to such extremes? Why not a 10 ft ground rod, #6 cu, and use the building steel as an electrode?

I was being facetious, along the lines of what can be calculated vs what one looks up in code or manufacturer tables.
