Electric Corona Clip from YouTube. What am I Seeing?

Is the way this looks due to the camera? What would I see if I saw this with the naked eye? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuSxngMWR7U&feature=related Thanks for reading. David in Wales.

I'm certain that you are seeing something superimposed on those images. In simple terms I think that this is some faked pictures. I do not see any changes at all in the shadow lines or other highlights off of any other surfaces as these "sparks" happen. With all of those apparently bright white corona "sparks" happening I would expect coincident moving shadow lines and highlights in the pictures. This looks like some early Star Trek or bad 50's era Science Fiction movie special effects. I was briefly considering that some ionizing radiation was directly effecting the film or CCD device to explain the lack of coincident effects but then the lens zoomed and the trickery moved with the image.

I looked at three or four different you tube videos with similar effects. All of the videos were either silent or in a foreign tongue so I could not discern what was being said. (Yeah, I'm an American.) Without knowing what were the actual image recording conditions and voltages that were happening at the time all I can say is that they just look either bogus or a poor recreation of a corona glow. The other aspect of these sparks in these videos was that there was no gradation in the sparks. Look at this video and this video of a guy playing with a Tesla coil, the spark tracks have a other hues and intensities than just white. Also these sparks light up the room.

redfed I have been looking at this for the last half hour and I think I have it! www.daycor.com sell special cameras that pick up a mix of spectrums. I have not read through their website yet to see exactly whats going on but I am sure this must be our answer. Let me know if you think I am barking up wrong tree.. and thankyou for your posts they are much appreciated. david in wales.

Yeah, their cameras, designed to pick up early corona effects, would likely make the images that are portrayed. We're seeing normally invisible spectra superimposed on the visible spectrum images.
Hmmm, I wonder if they'll be useful at work. Thanks for the heads up.

You're seeing what happens when secondary electrons from the coronal discharge ionize air molecules, sometimes even a few feet away from the coronal source. The energy generates a lot of UV as well as visible light (and some heat {IR} too of course). You get a cascading effect, which is what is being seen in these videos. The diagram below helps explain why the blobs of light seem to show up randomly and unrelated to the coronal source. (And I think persistence in the camera's imaging sensor is what causes the blobs to sometimes appear to move with the camera, creating that sense of being faked.)
