This is a much too basic and simple of an electricity problem with insufficient information to answer. If you are ever asked to jump start a machine you should refuse to do it because you will be the type of person that will explode a battery.

Suggested method though not considered workable: Hook positive to positive and negative to negative, forget about which is ground. Model A Ford; an employee of the owner has been asked to put a new battery in the A. Both times the battery has been put in the common but wrong way - Negative ground.

Ahem, have you at all considered the idea that with the atypical wiring of a positive ground that the battery voltages might not be the same. BOOM

Simple for you to state but simple doesn't have the answer yet....

I don't see any problem provided you connect as Guest said in #2. Not sure what he meant by "not considered workable".

Need to ensure the bodywork of the 2 vehicles don't touch each other, or there'll be a short circuit, and use the usual precautions when connecting and disconnecting the jump leads.

Cheers.........Codey

Many of our old farm tractors and trucks where positive ground systems before I converted them to standard 12 volt negative ground alternator setups.

You jump start something with a positive ground system just like any other piece of equipment. Positive to positive negative to negative.

Where is the hard part in that?

Re: Where is the hard part in that?

Codemaster already answered that (maybe not hard, but very important), but it bears repeating: Make sure the bodies of the two vehicles don't touch or have a conductive path between them! Otherwise lots of problems, including potential battery explosion.

It matters not that I've told them the same but your comments corroborating seems to make all the difference; thank you both

Its worth mentioning that the standard technique for two vehicles with negative ground is to

1. connect the cables directly to the battery on the car with the good battery, being certain not to allow the opposite ends to touch.

2. connect the positive cable to the battery of the car with the bad battery

3. connect the negative cable to a good clean ground on the car with the bad battery, preferably directly to the engine block.

This keeps the sparks away from the battery, which can explode if surrounded by enough hydrogen. It also makes a more direct connection from the boosting battery to the ground side of the starter motor.

So with a positive ground car receiving the boost, you would connect the positive cable last (to ground) rather than connecting the negative cable last. Certainly, you want to make sure the vehicles are the same voltage.
