Reefer Container (make : Carrier)

04/02/2007 8:38 AM

Dear sir

It is concerning above subject I have certain queries as follows, so please kindly advise me about the following question.

As we start the Reefer container after his run time SUCTION GAUGE PRESSURE is showing the reading 35 psi to 40 psi but suddenly after 3 to 4 minutes SUCTION GAUGE PRESSURE drops to 0 psi, this fluctuation is continuously going on. Means after in 3 to 4 minutes SUCTION GAUGE PRESSURE have showing down reading. So please kindly advise me on this issue which is creating problem.Thanking you

Bashir Shahid

Dear Bashir Shahid/vijay kumar,

You have not mentioned what is the state of delivery section? Is it showing in reciprocating or different? Suppose delivery section is reciprocating then it is sure that the compress is having problem which may be leakage in suction side, mechanical seal may be troubling of even there is leakage near pressure gauge. Problem is not big enough just think in the simplest way and with detailed thoughts.

Attempt once and try. Please give details of your attempt and net results if you wish further advice.

Your english is difficult, but if i understand what you're saying it sounds like you are low on freon...To check the freon level you must check both the suction and discharge sides...However an initial reading of 35lbs is too low...Determine the type of refrigerant from the plate mounted on the condenser....If it's R-22, your initial reading should be in excess of 120 psi...If you find that both pressures, suction and discharge, are 35 psi when off, then you definitely have a leak...You must realize that these systems can be dangerous to those inexperienced or untrained individuals...My advice is to seek out a qualified technician...

Bashir Shahid / Shahab

35 psi on suction means you are low on gas provided discharge pressure gauge reading is also corresponding to suction pressure i.e discharge pressure is also reducing with the decrease in suction pressure.

In this case you have to check for gas leaks, rectify the source and then charge gas, during the gas charging process you have to make sure about the type of gas required as now a days R134a is being used in the reefer containers.

If I understand you correctly, the suction pressure fluctuates between 0 PSIG and 35 PSIG every several minutes. I suspect you have two separate problems. You should assume that the metering device is not feeding correctly, either: (A) Because the refrigerant charge is low, (B) the filter drier is plugged, or (C) the metering device itself is restricted.

Then check to see if the pressure fluctuations are caused by: (1) Compressor capacity modulating up and down, (2) Hot gas bypass vavle opening and closing, (3) Condenser fan cycling on and off, (4) Indoor fan cycling on and off, (5) Defrost valve opening and closing, or (6) water in the refrigerant alternately freezing and melting withing the metering device (This can really happen). Call and expert!

ex-Carrier engineer here... model ??? Please and I'll try to point you in the right direction, (sounds like a sticky float valve, they have that problem in the large cirtificials)
