Using a PSA Oxygen Generator to Cut Steel?

04/02/2007 3:09 AM

Can a PSA oxygen generator's purity of 93%-95% maximum is suitable for steel cutting?

Yes, if you can get the flow rate. You are actually burning metal in oxygen and 95% is enough once you get it burning you stop the acetylene/propane and burn with oxygen. As you heat it you make test surges of oxygen and when hot enough the shower of sparks begins, and you can cut the combustion gas and continue on oxygen

Yes the oxygen would be ok.

Seems a long way round to use electricity to cut steel plus a fuel gas! Why not use a plasma cutter and bypass the whole problem?

http://www.kemenangan.co.id/mainpage.php?scode=PD01&prcategory=39&lang=en Take a look at this site - it tells you about a portable electrolysis based generator producing a stoichiometric mixture of oxygen and hydrogen (of course - what else) which cuts steel very effectively. It was developed by a friend of mine in Singapore many years ago but never really took off. It works very well though.

These things can work. They make the gasses as a misture and pipe them throiugh tubes with Davy style copper screen backflash arresters every few feet. They have no gas storage. All you have is what you produce on demand and exists in the pipe to your hand burner. This costs more than the use of oxygen to burn steel after combustion heating, but it is cheaper than the cost of regulators and bottles of compressed gasses for small users. As you scale up you run into the lower cost of industrial oxygen versus electricity based electrolysis, so there are no large scale machines to do this.

There is also the bang factor. These things suffer noisy but contained explosions in the tubes all the time, as it is a detonatable stoichiometric mix in the tube, and that is why there is zero storage.
