Roof / Tank Sealing Systems

02/17/2011 9:09 PM

Dear All,

I am using perma seal (eaze coat) for roof sealing. I would like to know if the same can be used inside of a water tank? Is this formulation water soluable even after curing?

Thanks.

No.

Probably not.

What would you use the water for?

I wouldn't drink it or wash my clothes in it. I would neither water the animals nor water the garden with water from that tank.

I was going to say use it for fire protection, but I don't really know if that is a good idea. No spec's on their website.

Check with the MSDS you should have received when you got the stuff. Does the manufacturer list it as a water tank sealant. If not listed for water tanks, it probably is not good to seal water tanks.

Ask the manufacturer if the product is water soluable after curing. Usually a good product has a staff available to answer these questions, even though you might have to dig around for a phone number.

If the tank is for potable (drinking) water, you need to use a specifically approved product, and apply and cure it according to the manufacturers recommendations in order that the water is not tainted.

If the sealant is in contact with water inside the storage tank, and that water is potable water meant for human consumption, them it must conform to National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) Standard 61. Otherwise it is unacceptable for any contact with potable water.

Before installing the sealant inside of the tank, you may want to first consult with the sealant manufacturer's technical representative to confirm that it is in conformance with NSF Standard 61.

As previously mentioned by others, check the MSDS sheet to confirm that the sealant is certified to the aforementioned standard.

Additionally, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) has a series of standards dealing with sealants. Please check their online reference library for applicable standards.

I failed to mention in my previous posting that many state Health Departments here in the USA that govern water supply have lists for acceptable and non-conforming paints and sealants.

You may want to first check with your state Health Dept. Here in New York we have the NYSDOH Bureau of Water Supply. You state (if in the USA) will must undoubtedly have a similar regulatory agency having jurisdiction over your water supply, treatment and distribution system.

Good luck with your project and coating that water storage tank!
