Mercedes 95S420 Repair

02/20/2011 11:19 AM

Hi, I am new here and need advice on my S420. There is an overriding issue of my failure to get competent repair from dealers and repair shops, and have decided to "do my own". First I will need to find an internet site with helpful advice. Second I will need a good repair manual for a 1995 S420. Third, I need to know how to pull the instrument panel to change a bulb. I have tried to run a blade around the panel to check for clips to the dashboard, but can't find how it is fastened.

The repair manuals that are available at parts stores are adequate for many repairs. If you're going to keep the car for a while, and do your own work on it, I would recommend getting a factory manual, they go much more in depth.

Do a google search for Mercedes forums, I'm sure there are many that would be helpful.

I recently had to change a check engine bulb in my mini van to pass inspection, which required removing the entire instrument panel. Instead I used an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel and cut a hole in the top of the dashboard, I had the bulb changed in about 15 minutes.

"and cut a hole in the top of the dashboard," I'll bet your wife loved that one!

She just shook her head and walked away. She does that a lot.

I tend to get mad in these situations........how hard would it have been to put a little access door in the top of the dash? All of the bulbs are right there.

All of the guys at the inspection place were quite impressed with my handiwork.

When I worked on cars, there were many times I wanted to kick some Detrioit engineer in his privates when trying to perform simple R&R job.

Transverse engines designed as in-line and then turned 90° gave me fits.

If you don't turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, you can't get the oil filter out of my Ford PU.

That's part of the reason I keep my old truck going. I can fix most everything.

I hope the bulbs in my wife's Camry don't burn out, I wouldn't be able to use that method on her car.

Yeah, the new stuff is designed with putting it together in mind, (I guess), not to be easy to work on later. The inspection guys had just changed a bulb for a lady in a newer SUV. She had to leave it there and it cost her over $350. No thanks.

In my opinion, the all-time classic, was accessing the battery on the Intrepid, I think that is when Chrysler really started to slide.

That's a toss up. Lets not forget the entire K car series. Rolling garbage!

Trying to work on any of this new stuff drives me nuts.

Here in the US we also have US cars with Japanese engines, in fact my minivan is a Chrysler with a Mitsubishi engine. I have to have every standard and metric wrench and socket handy. What fun!

There is an easier way to deal with the glowing warning lights. Lyn-door Industries sells a Dash Light Repair Kit. It is black, sticky on one side, and 3/4" wide. The back says 3M. Lyn-door says it is custom made just for the light repairs. And at $20 a roll, it is cheaper than having it repaired by the dealers.

I love this site! You gentlemen have a fantastic sense of humor. I had the pleasure of taking class members (Auto Repair) through the local GM plant for the usual plant tours.

Since I had been through the plant many times we were afforded the opportunity to see many things the usual tour folks didn't see.

The dashboards were assembled from the rear and they were assembled from the inside out. I could tell instantly the engineer(s) didn't care one bit about the poor slob that had to get in there and repair anything. And I applaud your unconventional procedure used to change that/those bulbs. I'm sure we have all at one time or another, maybe many times, would have loved to do as you did. I want you to know I received great satisfaction reading your procedure. Whatever you guys do , don't lose that sense of humor. It's what keeps us from becoming totally insane. Thanks

Oh boy, that was deep. I'm not going to say deep what.

For battery access on my wife's car, you have to un-bolt frame members.

My '72 Vette's battery is behind the driver's seat. In a square hole.

That is why I keep our 23+ year old Rear Wheel Drive Peugeot 505s on the road - I can and do repair and maintain them mostly with ease ..... They were designed with maintenance in mind - The Instrument cluster comes out with 2 clips to which they provided access holes - less than 30sec.

The entire dash took about 3 hours with me starting with no knowledge of how it was installed!

The instrument Binnacle is held in place by two clips at the side .. the way to get at them is with a couple of hooks and a gentle pull towards you however care must be taken in case you crack the front plastic.. all of this and more at
