1999 Ford Escort 4dr 2.0 SE, Error Code P0715 Won't Go Away

02/20/2011 8:53 PM

Hello CR4 reader. Im working on my aunts 1999 ford escort 4dr SE. The check engine light came on. so i scanned for the code. The code came up with P0715 (Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction) so i went and bought a new sensor and installed it. I erased the code drove it around town and came home still the same code. i put the car on my lift inspected the wires for the speed sensor everything looked good.I been looking all over the internet for help. Is there something else that could be triggering this code. i notice that some cars have a Input & output speed sensor i replaced the one on the firewall side on top of the transmission. if there is another one where is it located Thanks for your time

Welcome to the insanity. Do you have a shop manual for the car? It would help identify the location. Another possibility is there is a bad ground. Could also be a bad connection at one of the connectors. If the book says there is a 5 volt power supply at one of the wires on the sensor, you can check that , but only use a digital volt meter to keep the computer system safe. Unless we here from someone more familiar with this Ford system, I am going to suggest getting the manual. Good luck.

Check all of the connectors Fords wiring has a tendency to break at the connectors.

Try wiggling the harness at the sensors and see if it will go away.

Thank you Bob for the reply. I havent tested the wire for voltage. i just made sure it wasnt grounding out. I did check the grounds going from the motor to the frame everything checked out. i have a haynes manual i know they are garbage i just dont want to spend 200+ dollars on one from the dealer . if u seen this car u wouldnt neither lol. Thanks you

I think you're working on the wrong sensor. The one you want is located above the trans axle , close to the starter. You need to remove the battery/battery box to access it. Good luck!

Fredski i will check on that sensor ur talking about. I tried to unplug the speed sensor and reset the computer. then drove 5 miles came home still the same code p0715. i would think if it was the wrong sensor it would trip another code. unless that code goes off with more then one sensor. Thanks again

If you are in doubt as to which sensor the one you have is used for, clear all codes, and then unplug the sensor in question. just turn the key to the run position without starting, and the unplugged sensor will set at least one code.

The Haynes manual should show the wiring used on your sensor and ECM. If the sensor you replaced is the one that is being called for in the trouble code, test for continuity between the harness that plugs into the sensor, and the harness that plugs into the ECM. Unplug ALL wires from the ECM first, and be careful not to damage the connectors. Good luck.

I believe the turbine speed sensor is located on the driver's side of the transaxle to the right of the valve body cover.

P0715 can be set anytime turbine shaft rpm is not at an expected rpm by the pcm.To properly diagnose this code a scanner that can display transmission data pids is needed. This will prove out the sensor, wiring and pcm and also show rpm on the turbine shaft in all gear ranges including converter lock up. If any of the clutches or band or torque converter are slipping more than 100 - 200 rpm it can cause this code to set.

Ford says these are the possible causes but a false signal feed can also cause it as well as a slipping transmission that is above the program threshold.

- Transmission speed sensor circuit is open or shorted.

- Poor transmission speed sensor circuit connection

- Faulty transmission speed sensor

How many miles are on the car and do you know if the transmission has ever been serviced.
