Metal to Acrylic Bonding

02/22/2011 2:41 AM

Dear all

I want to fix acrylic sheet (250 x 200mm) on to a metal (steel) surface. This metal will be in open enviornment and under direct sunlight. Can some one help me what glue / adhessive can be used for long life. The site is a port in India and the temperature can go up to 50 degrees. I will be fixing 400 such acrylic sheets.

Thanks in advance.

Abrade both surfaces with sandpaper until they are dull, not glossy. Clean well with alcohol. Bond using a silicone adhesive that you squeeze from a tube.

Welcome to CR4.

Assuming that these are signs/poters or similar and do not have mechanical function, I'd also sugges that you get them as thin as possible, even flexible film if that's possible so that differences in thermal expansion don't cause issues.

If you click into the "GLOBALSPEC" site, you can then enter relevant details of the challenge that you have. I've recently done this for pipe adhesives and received local (Australian) response to my requests. Your nearest suppliers will contact you.

I would go for a Polyurethane sealant if you want a flexible sealing. If looking for something more rigid: Expoxy is the best option. As you came to CR4 for help, I may assume you have not enough experience in this field. My advise is to glue 10 samples of acrylic to SS using different adhesives (5 adhesives= 50 samples). Samples should be submitted to a lab for an accelerated ageing test which consistes of exposing the samples to heat and UV radiation for about 300 hours on a row. You will easily find out which material works best. On the other hand, this is much cheapeaper than having to replace 400 unglued panels
