WHEN I DO A STRESS RELIEVING?

02/22/2011 2:07 PM

I HAS A BLOWER'S SHAFT, 3.500" DIAMETER COUPLING SIDE AND 3.000" DIAMETER COUNTER COUPLING SIDE, I FIX BEARING ZONE WELDING IN TIG PROCESING, RECOVERING 0.062" RADIAL IN BOTH SIDE. MY QUESTION, IF IS NECESARY DO A STRESS RELIEVING, BLOWER IS RUNING 1800 RPM, HASTELLOY C22 IS BLOWER SHAFT?

Replace the shaft with new. Welding bearing surfaces is not a good practice on shafts moving 1800 rpm. Even if your only building them up a few thousands.

Also, Typing in Caps is considered shouting on the web.

Please ignore reply in my last post.

Post Weld Heat Treatment of Hastalloy C22:
In the majority of corrosive environments, C-22 products are used in the as-welded condition. Post-weld heat treatment—full solution annealing (1900°-2150° F) or stress relief annealing (1100°-1200° F)—is usually not required.

Annealing is often performed after cold working operations to restore ductility if the cold work is above 7% outer fiber elongation. A full solution anneal at 1900°-2150° F is required for Hastalloy C-22; stress relief temperatures used on stainless steel (1100°-1200° F) are not effective and may actually promote alloy precipitation which is detrimental to corrosion resistance property of the alloy.

In your case if shaft is not bent after welding, you can directly machine the reclaimed bearing areas and go ahead.

Hastelloy C22 is not a good material to be reclaimed after welding. You might have developed and approved welding procedure specifications before start of welding on such a thick dia shaft. In fact it is very difficult to avoid bending of shaft after welding and if you tends to go for stress relieving, you require special fixture for keeping the shaft hanging during SR. You might have to replace this shaft after all this. Bearing area could have been recovered using under cut and putting tolerance rings. Any way Good Luck.
