Transmission problems

02/27/2011 1:58 AM

I have a 2000 Saturn S Series with standard 5 speed manual transmission. Gears go in fine but if I accellerate too quick it slips out of gear until I let off accelerator. RPM's will kick up letting me know it is not in gear. It just is not staying in gear if accellerated quickly, Ihave to ease it causeing honking from other drivers.

Not the news you want to here, but Saturn transmissions are notorious for going out.

I think your going to have to take it to a shop to get it diagnosed. It could be anything from low fluid, to a simple adjustment, to a bad transmission. My brother in law had one that quit going in reverse. He didn't want to spend the money on a new tranny, so for over a year he had to park so he could pull out forward.

Sounds like the detent mechanism (spring-loaded ball bearings) is faulty. Does it happen on all gears or just one?

If it's just on top gear you could arrange a rubber strap to hook over the gear stick and hold it in. Bit of a lash-up, but maybe OK for a temporary measure, and I've seen worse things!

Basically it goes in gear fine but on the highway while in gear I try to pass someone it goes out but when I ease the accelerator it goes back in. My dad says it could be a motor or trans mount broken and when the engine torques when accelerated it causes the linkage to didengage and when I ease off the accelerator the engine settles back and it goes back in.

I think your ol' Dad has a good point. Specially the bit about it going back in gear when you ease off, that sounds like a clincher. As Lyn says, you need to check. Do let us know!

Check for Service Bulletins, then take it to a shop.
