Ceiling Fan Remote Control Problem

02/28/2011 3:45 PM

I have a ceiling fan controlled by a wireless remote on/off/speed controller. The system is 16 years old. The room size is 11 x 20 w/ 8ft ceiling.

Lately the fan does not always respond to the remote, only if I operate the remote from a particular area of the room does the fan respond.

What could be causing this balky behavior? Is it easily serviceable?

Also how can I determine if it's the transmitter or receiver which is the problem?

Thanks.

Well Hell,

The thing is 16 years old. Put it down before it burns the house down.

The receiver antenna is probably clogged with 16 years of dirt and grease. The motor is inefficient and the blades are probably dirty. OK, not your blades.

Change the batteries in the transmitter and if that doesn't work get a new fan. The new one will pay for itself in reduced operating costs, over time.

Check out the LynDoor Ind.™ Zephyr® voice operated fan system. Available in 16 different languages and dialects, including new nautical profanity recently discovered. Morse Code still available for you mutes. Not to be confused with two Utes.

Don't know why you got OT, sounds like the best advice that could be given.

New unit more cost efficient to operate - 16 yo unit safety and efficency.....Hmmmmmmm........let me tink (yes, I said "tink") about this.

Should be a GA as far as I see it!

Do you have a braille version for 208 3 phase? Are the instructions in braille?

We had to discontinue the Braille model. People kept falling off the ladder when they tried to install the fan. Anything over 110V can knock you silly if you don't see it coming.

Well,

Thanks for that. It's just a slap on the wrist. Probably for the commercial plug for LynDoor™ Ind.

I see nothing wrong with plugging an item that may be unknow to the poster. If the coincidence is that LynDoor gets a sale, what is the harm?

Towards that end, can I possibly interest you, corelite, in a hard cover copy of the latest edition of The CR4 Guide to Shameless Self Promotion. At 216 pages with 88 color illustrations, this book is certain to become a favorite in your library. This volume is one of many offered by LynDoor™ Press, a division of LynDoor™ Industries.

Limited to six (6) copies per order, subject to availability.

OK, OK... I'll mark this OT.

Check the battery of the remote and also check the capacitor of the fan. Some times EM waves installed in the room also affect the speed regulator of the fan .

He tried to dismantle the EM waves but wasn't able to make them "standing".

If it is an IR (infrared) remote you could have a fair collection of dust inside the receiver window after 16 years.

Has the transmitter drifted off frequency? I had this happen with a garage door closer. I twiddled the internal adjustment, tested it, adjusted again, until I was happy that the system would respond OK. It was definitely off frequency.

Your digital camera on your phone can see if the infrared remote is working. Try it.

Most of remote controller of ceiling fan work by RF. after few years the frequency will change due to drop or knock. If you change the battery and it is still not working then open the cover of the handheld, there should be a trimpot (round shape about 6 or 7 mm) use plastic screwdriver to adjust it. Try to be as close as possible to the fan while doing fine adjustment when you get the respond from the fan then slowly move away and keep fine tune it until you are happy with the distance. Good luck
