ABB 15 HKS Breaker Fault

03/01/2011 3:37 PM

Hi in the ABB switchgear breaker type 15-HKS (15kv breaker), when racked in tried to close the breaker immediately opened. Put another similar breaker in the cell and closed the breaker it holds fine. Sure the breaker has problem, could you suggest what would be a highly possible scenario.

It's been a while since I worked one of these but off the top of my head two items that come to mind are:

Is the rack in/out mechanism fully engaging when clamped in? If my memory serves me, there should be two to four limit switches that close when racking in, check these.

Is the trip button (if equipped) sticking and/or wiring OK?

I tried to Google "ABB breaker type 15-HKS trouble shooting" and a few variations and did not come up with much.

Have you tried contacting ABB tech support?

"there should be two to four limit switches that close when racking in,"

Sorry - should have been "when racked in"

Check the isolation mechanism, I've had the same problem myself.

Please note;

Whatever you do please do in proper isoaltion , and don't force the breaker to go in. There must be some problem in the reacking mechanism or else where and consequences are dangerous.

The breaker is not properly reset,remove or rack out,check spring and be sure its in good position,adjust properly if not in good position,reset again,rack in and close breaker.

I have experienced similar problem and made several trials to reset and i succeeded to close the breaker.
