Pen Scanner

03/02/2011 8:02 PM

I have never seen or used something called a "pen scanner". It can be moved over a printed line to record it then transferred to a computer with OCR to turn it into text. This would be handy for transcribing a line or two from a historical text which cannot be scanned on a flatbed scanner because it won't open far enough. Or from any text when only a couple of lines are needed.

I think I have seen advertisements for them at about $160, which I can't justify for what I am doing. Is a less expensive version available?

Thanks.

I believe there is software out there that can use a picture of a text to attempt to translate to digital format so all you need is a good camera and a computer with the appropriate software.

Thanks. The text scanner is interesting. I'll be checking it out some more.

You could take a photograph of it with your camera, make a .pdf of it, and ocr that. i have software called Paperport that will do that and there is also something called pdf converter that will do it. once you've got the .pdf, you open it in word from within paperport and it ocr's it. jwatersphd

A couple of years ago we tested several OCR programs and that was the best one:

just what are you doing?

there is one form of digital optical scanner... called a digital camera.

if you are trying to scan 3d on the cheap.. check out this scalable system.

(I don't know if it can do text...)

Completely off topic, but to answer your question:historical research where there are a few applicable books in the library that cannot be circulated, thus must be copied (or hand transcribed) somehow. Example: I found 2 sentences in separate books that were of great interest. I hand copied them. Photocopying is not really an option since these old documents won't open flat enough, and the Librarian would clobber you if you broke the spine of the book!

I don't do this often enough to justify much expense myself, but there are plenty of researchers around the country. Hopefully I can pass on any info I get.
