Incredibly Safe Table Saw

03/07/2011 3:01 PM

Check this out. I thought I would share this video as I am sure many of the CR4ers have table saws. This is the next evolution of safety. Any guinea pigs willing to test the validity of the mechanism?

I've seen this before, and I think it's a great idea. Unfortunately it probably will become mandated and raise the cost of table saws.

There is no way I could ever purposefully run my finger into a spinning saw blade.

There was a CR4 blog about the SAWSTOP a while ago.

These became mandatory at a place I was at. Had to replace two Delta UNISAWS with these. Two weeks after the saws were installed, a guy lost two fingers using a big plunge router.

Power tools are ALWAYS ready to remind the unwary. SAFETY FIRST!

Ga. I agree always safety first.

Since the saw blade stops so fast, is there any danger in it or other parts shattering and presenting another hazard with flying debris? Will the operator get careless with a sense of safety? I am sure if I was operating one with the sensors, I would still be as leery as when I use a blade without sensors. But then I rarely use the table saw. Workers who use the saw daily may have a different outlook. Sometimes familiarity breeds complacency.

And are these blades real expensive to replace compared to standard blades?

Sorry I missed the SAWSTOP thread.

That is pretty amazing.

But it seems a bit much that the safety feature trashes the machine! I can only imagine how much swearing I would do if it went off 'by accident' or for some other cause (I dunno, fleck of sweat maybe?).

Nuisance tripping can be a bit of an annoyance, as well as the saw being out of action for awhile. However, having guards is already mandated. Any shop which brought in this device would still have to have guards.

I respectfully suggest that "sawstop" works not so well with a dado blade.

I wonder how this mechanism would respond to a MOVING steak or sausage and not an almost stationary finger. Or if a not so sharp carbide tip decide not to sink on Al-brake. Or just some decide to chip off braking the next too. The worse being you expected the darn thing to stop! I'll stick to my handsaw thanks.
