Boiler Conversion From Electricity to Oil Burner

03/13/2011 7:47 PM

I have 2 boilers, 1 is a Superior Boiler Works with heating surface 1292 sq.ft/ design press 150 psi steam capacity of 8625 lbs/hr and main valve capacity of 10336 lbs/hr. The 2nd boiler is a cleaver brook with max pressure of 150 psi, 104.5 gph oil. I am hoping to switch from electricity (120volts / 60Hz) or diesel generator to oil burner as the primary supply (oil not heavier than 2). What type of oil burner would you recommend and what is the benefit, if any.

I don't know if the internal geometry of an electric boiler would accommodate a burner chamber and and air flow path.

I think your best option is to use a fuel fired generator to produce the power the boilers require rather than changing out the boilers.

The generator waste heat could also be an added source of thermal input (jacket heating and coil in the exhaust stack, plus tubing wrapped around the stack (under any insulation) to reduce the load of the boilers.

I would have a burner manufacturers representative come out and check out your boiler. If they have a burner that will work get a quote. The fan power may need 3 phase 240V.

I don't completely understand what you want as 120 Volt single phase won't handle your steam demand without large cables. You will need at least 440 volt 3 phase to generate the amount of steam wanted.
