On Volvo that is a message that is generated by the engine management and is telling you that is time to have a standard service to the transmission which is the filter change. The same message can show up if a fault is detected which you need to check and see if any codes are set which may not set the check engine light not all codes will set the check engine light. If you check and no codes are set then it is just a routine maintenance thats required.

If there are no codes in the onboard diagnostics yes I will have to check how you reset the maintenance indicator what year is your Volvo.

The transmission is in limp-in mode. There will be a trouble code in the computer. If the code is cleared, it might function again until whatever the defect is reoccurs. Good luck!

Almost all scanners will also erase the codes but make sure you record the codes first to make sure that the problem has been resolved if it hasn't then it will just reset. When you say that it has not changed do you mean that it has not changed gears.

Then it has gone into Limp mode and you ill have to pull the codes off of the computer to give direction toward the problem that has made it go into the limp mode. If you can get to major auto parts store they will usually have a OBD2 scanner that will pull the codes out. You can call the local parts stores and ask them if they have a scanner and will they pull the codes for you then we can probably give a proper diagnostic. What year is your S60?

I would check the fluid level IAW the owner's manual, Volvo"s are notorious, if a quart low= no go.
