How to Use THIS Spray Gun

03/16/2011 3:00 PM

I have this old spray gun. I'ts says model 331-A W.R.Brown.

I would like to spray primer/coating alkyd paint on small steel parts.

I have the air line and compressor.

When I hook it up there is air continually coming from the nozzle. When I squeeze the trigger the air is lessened but still coming. Normal? Busted seal? Supposed to do that?

Anybody familiar with this kind of gizmo and how to operate it?

First, take it apart. Be sure everything is clean, etc. It should just set there after you hook it up. You may need new O-rings. Pulling the trigger back will let air out. That will pull paint up the tube and out the nozzle.

Go to Harbor Freight and I think they have exploded views of them. Or, buy a new one. They're only $20.00USD.

Oh no! That is a good cup gun! Worth saving, if salvageable. Air supply at too high pressure is one usual culprit for damaged seals.

Here is a manual for it. Most paint shops should still be able to get parts.

Say, that looks like a pretty cool deal.

Have you used some of those? If yes, do they work worth a darn?

We have to send some touch-up paint to a job every now and then.. We have to take our paint, thin it out, take it to a paint shop where they put into rattle cans. They charge us a bunch of money to can our paint, it is a lot of trouble, and the spray cans only work about half of the time.

Used them for touch ups they work okay. Would not recommend painting large items with them. They are not cheap. you can check one out home depot has them. Google Preval they sell direct.

I used to use them all the time when I was doing electostatic painting, for touch up.

Yep, they work. Thin the paint and run it through a cone strainer into the jar. You're ready to go.

They work really well, if you don't expect too much.

You have to thin the paint enough to get it to spray. Just like a spray can.

It's basically a spray can that you can use for multiple colors or applications.

If you can get seals for it, it's pretty easy to use. Start at about 45 psi and adjust if you need to from there. The small upper knob controls the amount of paint coming out of the gun. The larger lower knob controls the spray pattern. Clockwise= less paint on top and smaller pattern on bottom. Practice on a piece of cardboard until you get it where you want.

If you get the gun going you'll probably notice pretty quickly that I got the knob functions backwards in post #8. Small knob-pattern, large knob- material.

Just came in for supper and saw you guys had already found what I needed.

Just so I understand:

This gun does just that, it bleeds air all the time.

Top screw adjusts the air

Bottom screw adjusts the amount of paint.

By tweaking the two screws I get the kind of spray pattern??? Correct?

Yes, there are both constant air flow guns that flow air all the time and the trigger regulates the flow of the paint and the other type- those that the the trigger controls the flow of the air and the paint. The constant flow type were originally used for small compressors 35-40 psi max that had no storage tanks. The plumbing was much simpler therefore the units were cheaper.

I have a DeVilbiss gun that is approx 70 years old that still works fine. I use it for those jobs where I am not rushed for time. It has sentimental value to me since it was my grandfathers.

Good Luck, old salt

I know what you mean about old tools. My paw left me some hand tools from when he worked in the foundary down here making huge brass propellers. I use them all the time and have no fear of breaking anything.

This sprayer and a shed full of all kinds of hand tools along with some really old electric tools , was left to me by an elderly friend.

I use them all , although I did change out some of the wiring on the older drills and such.

In this case we are having some steel implements built for use with our deep water research trawls. I do not want to let the customer have an unpainted chunk of steel. Looks do count sometimes.....even with Government folks...ha ha!

The more added value we can put on our work, the longer we stay in busness.

Thank you and everyone else for the information.

Some spray guns are made to blow continupusl. They are intended for use with small inexpensive compressors without pressure controllers.
