Planetary Vs. Helical Gear Box

03/19/2011 11:15 PM

In my LPG bottling Plant, we have conveyor system to move the cylinders.Presently, we are using Planetary type gear box to run these conveyors. There is a proposal to change them with helical gear box.

Pls provide a comparison and suggest the best of these two.

Useful data:

Detachable Chain Conveyor used for shifting LPG cylinders with a max. wt. of 40 Kgs.

The conveyor length varies from 15m to 55m powered by 2, 3, 5 or 7.5 HP motors.

Cylinder diameter 345 mm.

Planetary-

Compact hence occupies much less space

Input and output shafts co-axial.

More uniform load distribution on gear teeth (and hence the journal bearings are a bit less stressed)

They both are not comparable, planetary is a gear system made with many gears and components, on other side Helical gear is a kind of gear that can be used in many applications and gear boxes,

Not only that, the helical gear set primary cosideration is it's force distribution. The two equal & opposite angled helical gear set used for where higher loads applied with reduced noise.

Thanks

I would say a helical gear box would be better suited... In my experience, planetary gears cost more.

It seems like most places I have been us some form of helical gear box for these applications - at least in smaller sizes. You are getting up to some pretty large drives in terms of horsepower. Maybe you just should convert a couple of the smaller ones and see how things work.

There is quite a lot of expense involved converting drives from one style to the other.

There is a need to dig out the reasons of selecting planatory gears and reasons for requirement of change as well. I do suggest to go through and conclude whether change is necessary or not. If it is necessary, then consult your engineering contractor for selection of gear type.

Wish you good luck!

Hello,

Either of the gearboxes will work in your application. Can I ask why the reason to switch to helical? Is it for energy savings or are you having problems with the planetary gearboxes?

My company has both planetary and helical gearboxes and could potentially be able to help you figure out what helical gearbox you would need to use.

You can see our products at www.transtecno.com If the wording is in Italian click on the British flag in the upper right corner to convert to English.

If the proposed change to Helical Gear box is dictated by the cost of repair/maintenance of the planetary gearboxes, then maybe it is a good idea BUT must be checked from the point of gear reduction ratios required:

Helical gearboxes will be bulkier for high reduction ratios, and therefore, might cost more initially. They will be more robust if properly adapted and maybe easier to maintain / repair.

Planetary gearboxes will be more compact for the same reduction ratios but need proper installationand maintenance. they might cost the same or more for identical applications.

Better check the different manufacturers and see the cost/availabilty...

Planetary gears are costlier, used where less space & high reduction ratio is required. Even you can try worm gear boxes too, which are used for belt conveyors & suitable for high reduction ratio.

Though hopelessly less efficient than a properly designed spur/helical/planetary gearbox

What are the problems with existing planetary type gear boxes? Or, do you want to change just for fun and invite problems in running your conveyors.
