Vector Group Test

03/21/2011 6:52 AM

Dear All, I need some clarification on Vector Group Test procedure. It is mentioned as we need to short any one of the R Y B Terminals on the HT side with the corresponding phase Terminal on the LT side, let us say 'R' Phase. Then we need to apply 3 Ph voltage across the HT Terminals keeping the secondary open. Then we need to measure voltage across several points and record. My question is why do we need to short the HT & LT 'R' phases? We are measuring only the voltages across various terminals, then why to short the terminal? What impact will it have on other terminal voltages? Kindly Clarify.

Unless you create an equi-potential point between the HV & LV, you will not be able to create vector equations. The test is actually super-imposing the LV vector with the HV Vector an then forming vector equations. Then by applying & measuring voltages you verify whether the vector equations are satisfied. Ifd one doesn't short th HV & the relative LV terminal, then the test would be a plain ratio test.

Raghavendran R are you a student?

I've been looking at your previous posts some look as if they come from a junior engineer, others a student.

If you are a junior engineer please don't try to pass yourself off with secondary knowledge from the net

As You rightly pointed out sir, I have just started my career as an engineer at a power plant. I don't have much practical exposure.I see CR4 as a place where I can learn lot of new information regarding Practical Power system Engineering Problems. Honestly,I never had any intention to "try to pass myself off".I posted that question since I was unaware of the real idea behind Shorting the terminals.Any how thanks for that Advise.
