Let's hope that when it recycles, somewhere, an intelligent life form may be discovered. We missed our chance this time around.

I mean, don't mention hope. I want to see based on facts and laws of nature.

There is a theory which states that if anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

And that's why I'm not going to work today! This could be the last day I recognize anything in the universe.

Oh, but maybe that's just old farmers disease and alcohol finally catching up with me.

Re: A Reversible Universe?

Heh heh (superior smirk ). Please see

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_Hanoi

for proof.

Especially ...

"There is a legend about an Indian temple which contains a large room with three time-worn posts in it surrounded by 64 golden disks. Brahmin priests, acting out the command of an ancient prophecy, have been moving these disks, in accordance with the rules of the puzzle, since that time. The puzzle is therefore also known as the Tower of Brahma puzzle. According to the legend, when the last move of the puzzle is completed, the world will end."

We Indians are halfway there already. You better make out your will, leaving everything to those Brahmins. Maybe then you will have a chance to be reborn in the new universe..

If it were left to me to solve the puzzle, the world would never end.

Simple .... the gif image (the blankety-blank thing doesn't show up here, but is there in the wiki) gives the method ... just 264 moves required. We brahmins are quite clever and adept at this. (Not as much as your Boston Brahmins though )

" ... just 264 moves required ...." - that's one too many!

BTW, did you ever read "The Nine Billion Names of God"?

Pity the plot summary in the wiki is a bit of a spoiler. I first read it (in The Other Side of the Sky, from the local library) when I was about 15, and it made quite an impression.

i envy the opportunity you had.

We in India had extremely limited access to books from the West, so we had to rely on libraries to buy and stock such treasures. So i missed out on this. Well, i am still alive and kicking, computer-savvy, armed with a Kindle...so what can stop me now ? NOTHING !

Thanks, JohnDG for opening a whole new horizon for me....

None so far or never heard of recurrence theory. "A reversible universe" -no, its not. It is definite that the universe will die in a thermodynamic heat death. BLACKHOLES are hope for recurrence, well Hawking itself theorize even those things radiate. It fails.

Do you know I have already earned 40 GA in adjacent leading universe and on 25 GA in adjacent lagging universe,

And I got GA for this answer in leading universe. So by law of universe a GA is due here too.

It seems to me that we already exist in a reversing 'U' - as I take one step forward and then end up two steps back. - and then I ask myself the BIG question and wonder 'WHY'. - Loupy.
