Carbon Credits Via Energy Saving

03/21/2011 10:54 AM

Hi, Could you possibly tell me how much energy must be saved to obtain a Carbon credit?

A client of mine (Large Property Group in South Africa) would like to save energy by converting to Solid State Lighting (approximately 85% savings on energy used for lighting).

Question: I we save 1 Mega Watt, how many Carbon Credits would we receive?

Regards,

Thane Bosch

Ask the South African energy agency.

Unless your client is running a process that produces carbon emissions what are they hoping to gain? Carbon credits can be traded, but saving on lighting is (excuse the pun) hardly worth a light.

Thank you for your reply.

Saving huge amounts of energy via solar energy or Solid State Lighting means that less coal is burned to provide the energy. When we start looking at over 1000 Commercial shopping centres and office parks this will make a serious impact. I am working on a number of porfolios of this size at present so I would really like to know how to calculate Carbon Credits.

I will get hold of the Dept. of Energy as advised.

Thane

Don't take this the wrong way, but if you working on such a large portfolio why do you need to ask for information here? It should be basic to you, unless these projects are in your imagination.

Valid question.

I am a Financial Planner by profession. I offer Financial solutions to my clients both personal and corporate.

I have only recently (last 6 months) become involved with a company who holds the sole licence to distribute Cree SSL to Sub-saharan Africa.

This being said I am investigating every option for my clients (Eskom Rebate, Carbon Credits, finance options ect). I searched the Web today hoping for answers on Carbon Credits and what they involve. I stumbled across this site.

Question: are you South African? Do you have any information that could assist me?

Regards,

Thane

That will depend on how much Carbon Dioxide is created at your generating plant to make the electricity. Wind, Solar, Geothermal, Hydroelectric, etc. do not involve CO2, so switchng to one of them from a utility that uses coal, biomass, natural gas, or petroleum will generate a measurable decrease in Carbon emissions, thus the Carbon Credit. If your utility does not use a carbonaceous fuel, there is no reduction in Carbon footprint from reducing consumption. Check with your local administrators to get their evaluation, based on the performance of the local utility.

Carbon foot print is a measure of the exclusive total amount of carbon dioxide emissions that is directly and indirectly caused by an activity or is accumulated over the life stages of product. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can be classified in to three main types, namely, the Direct or Scope I emissions (combustion of fuels; most common, also known as the primary carbon footprint), the Electricity of Scope II emissions (not directly controlled; contributes to 17 per cent of the global GHG emissions), and the indirect emissions from products and services purchased or Scope III emissions (also known as secondary carbon footprint).Detailed calculations of carbon footprints are provided in the GHG Protocol's Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard (revised edition); the ISO 14064; and the PAS 2050 standard of the British Standards Institution (BSI).The smaller the carbon footprint, the more environment-friendly is the organization.
