Ultrasonic Leak Detector

03/21/2011 12:14 PM

Afternoon All,

I am looking for any information you have on ultrasonic leak dectors.

I have gotten information from two companies Nex Flow and Exair.

They both claim to be the one I am looking for but one is twice the price of the other.

The Nex Flow does seem to be more robust looking.

Any information or experience you have had in this area would be appreciated.

Cheers.

I don't know what your application is but I've used an older Amprobe model

that has since been changed to a new model that looks just like Nex Flow (web page)

but I think they're both Amprobe but maybe different accessories (transmitter etc)

I used it for rough field work about 7 years and it's been dependable

I think it was around $300 back then

I have had to resolder some joints inside it at

times due to bouncing around in my truck but it has saved the day several times

You can google "amprobe ultrasonic detector " and get several prices

Thanks for your reply,

While checking the energy usage of my air compressors it became apparent that when production were finished at night the compressors were coming on more often and for longer than I would have expected. I have adjusted the set points to reduce this as much as I can.I am looking to reduce air leaks around my factory.I have spent a bit of time and any audible leaks have been taken care of already.

I have encountered such problems before...

at the end of the day you will not be able to avoid walking along your pipelines with soapy spray and good ears, find the leaks and deal with each one of them...

The ones I used (many years ago) detected the ultra sonic sound waves produced by small leaks. Even in the 60's they were small devices and very dependable.....battery operated and quite light, about the size of a flashlight, with a "sound collector" where the bulb would be....

Maybe one day I will make one, just for fun only....

I had and used the SDT equipment and rate it very high. Very sound and trouble free plus you can detect any ultra sound leaking. If testing an enclosed shape you will have to purchase the ultrasound generator to place inside and do your scan outside. Any place that will allow gas or liquid to excape will allow ultra sound to escape and is detectable. UE also makes good equipment. If a one shot need for this device there are rental possibilites and or contractors that can take care of you. Excellent for air leaks and trending rotating equipment. Ultra sound is your first signature of pending issues.
