Slab Floors and Moisture

03/21/2011 2:29 PM

I looked at a home that has been vacant for a while-foreclosure- to purchase and found that there was moisture in the bath tub. The home had been de-winterized and the water shut off (faucet was bone dry) so it was odd that there were beads of water in the tub. Is it possible that water could be coming up thru the slab and into the tub? Please advise. Thanks!

It's most likely condensation (think dew drops).

"water could be coming up through the slab and into the tub"?

The only way water is going to get into the tub is either through the drain or the faucet, or through condensation. Tubs are "waterproof".

It would help to know where the house is. Georgia is different than Arizona.

There are probably holes in the wall behind the bath tub and cold air getting in around the bath tub and since the tub is metal you are getting condensation. It is the same as condensation on a cold window.

They turned on the heat to show you the house and the tub being cast iron and cold had moisture condensing on it?

"Is it possible that water could be coming up thru the slab and into the tub?"

Possibly, if the tub was flush with, and recessed into the earth beneath, the slab.
