RSLinx Classic Lite Limitations

03/25/2011 7:55 AM

For 3 days I've been trying to figure out why I can't see data over the ethernet port of a CompactLogix L32E using OPC/DDE. Finally I realized that Rockwell wants me to pay for that privilege with an update or a less disabled version of RSLinx.

I feel like I am being held hostage by this vendor. And my customer experience with them has been less than pleasant.

I guess my question is simply what version are the integrators using? I'm considering RSLinx OEM for a small fortune. It may be more than I need but my sales rep. is not very forthcoming with less expensive alternatives. I don't know if RSLinx Single Node will paint me into a corner too much because my PLC will need to share data with 4 devices linked over a local internet. Suggestions?

I would first consider some third party products to see if they can do what you are looking for. Google Kepware, Ingeardrivers.com, AutomatedSolutions.com, ABopcServers.com, MatrikonOPC.com as examples. Some skip right by the need for RSLinx.

Not much help to you I'm afraid, but when I saw how much Rockwell wanted for RSLinx I wrote my own DF1 interface. It's quite limited, but allows for data exchange between a PC and any Micrologix PLC. There are now about 30 copies working in the field, so it saved a small fortune.

I can send you an exe configured to run with a MicroLogix 1500 - I don't have access to any others to test it. Also can't guarantee that it'll run under anything except XP.

Hi

Please can you share your invention with me too. I want to connect Allen Bradley PLC with PC without the use of RSLinx software. It would be of great help for me if you can help with this issue. Thanks in advance

RSlinx is just the connector to the hardware to PC. If your trying to use it to see data then your in the worng software park. Now having said that Rockwell is going to take your 1st born and maybe your next of kin for down payment on the correct materials to do what your after. There are some off brand software packages that do a very good job emulating Rockwell materials. You will have to do a google search and see what oyu need. Same issue with this path like getting off brand sofware, is new hardware from Rockwell A/B, codes have not been re-written for them yet.

GoodLuck

Think Joe knows that, and is objecting (as I did) to the bill.

Problem solved! Here is what I learned. RSLinx Classic Lite is bundled with the RSLogix software packages. It can be configured to open up the Ethernet Port but it is a pain in the butt.

For the Micrologix devices, the Ethernet port is set up in two steps within RSLogix 5000. First, in the configuration window, while connected to the target PLC but offline for the moment, you must set the IP address of the device. This is stored with the program but the Port Configuration is reset to zero the first time the RSLogix software runs.

Then you must go Online and set it again and set the Sub net mask. Nothing needs to be done for the Gateway. Its these little tricks that haven't been automated that drives me nuts. Rockwell has come a long way with this software but there are still some issues, at least in this older version I'm working with.

Anyway I hope this helps the next person that has trouble with it.
