Alphanumneric Key of Control Panel

03/28/2011 6:00 AM

hi all,

I have a shearing machine of Engel(US Company). it has control panel xl120 series of AMS controls. The numeric keys on the control panel are not working properly. I have to press the keys by force with my fingernails to actually enter the values. i m a production engineer and have very less knowledge about electronics...The AMS does not provide support in india.

plz help by sending suggestions or toubleshooting methods for my problem.

will be gratefull.

Manish

if you can send pictures of the keyboard some suggestions might emerge.

cheap rubber flexible keyboards can often be cleaned by removing the rubber top and keys and clean the exposed patterns so that the conductive rubber will complete the circuit when you push it. ??

This is a cheap scanned membrane keyboard. As time goes by the resistance of the contact made when you push the membrane across the conductive pads increases until you have problems with it making reliable contact.

A smart tech could replicate the grid in high quality push button switches for about $40-50 plus the cost of his time, or a new panel can be ordered from AMS.

It is just the front panel you need, not the entire controller, but AMS may want to stick it to you and make you pay $500 for a $5 panel?

Here is the same model number, but by another manufacturer (Yokogawa): http://www.instrumart.com/Product.aspx?ProductID=31338

Does your display look like this? If so, Yokogawa might be able to provide support.

I've had worked with AMS controls. You are most likely going to have to order a replacement XL100 from AMS. They did not make the XL100's user "flashable"; not able to change the main program. They have records of every unit they programed and will send you the completely programed unit. You can then send in the old one, get it repaired, and use it as a spare. Yes, this is expensive.

My company used the AMS controls on their rollformers and presses. They had to have a spare XL100 programed and ready to go for breakdowns. That became somewhat better with the XL200 series where we could, after you bought all the cables and software, make any XL200 work in any XL200 press or rollformer.

It's very easy to swap out, if that's any consolation to you.
