Unasked email via CR4-GlobalSpec product alerts

03/29/2011 4:05 AM

Besides my subscription to CR4's Daily Digest I also subscribed to some of CR4-GlobalSpec's product alerts. Sometimes I click the "read more" buttons in these brief headers to check if the product is indeed of interest to me.

Lately I have received several unasked-for emails ~usually referred to as 'spam' or 'junkmail'~ from companies mentioned in these alerts, even without actually having visited their website. The only explanation I can think of is that somehow CR4-GlobalSpec enables these advertisers to know my email address when I click the "read more" button. I would consider that an unacceptable privacy violation. But really, I can hardly imagine CR4 to be promoting this kind of obtrusive spamming.

Can somebody please explain?

GlobalSpec is a completely different site. Like most everywhere else on the web, when you click on the read more button it places a cookie in your computer.

Long story short, if you clear your cookies after these sessions, this will stop. You will just have to log back in on your next session.

GlobalSpec, and CR4 for that matter, is supported through advertising. This type of targeted advertising based on what you may be interested in is quite common and is considered acceptable. Just a minor annoyance really.......easy to stop. To me it's worth it for the wealth of free content that we get.

This is why you need a 'second identity' when on the interweb.

Do all your 'research' and 'registrations' with ID #2 and they go to that in-box - not clutter up your working business mail.

Tip #2 use different names for your first initial of the #2 ID, when they ask for a name, then when you get 'personally addressed' spam - you know who it was that 'sold you out' to the spammer.

I'd be willing to bet, if you were ever bored enough to read it all, the GlobasSpec privacy policy tells you they do indeed share your email address, and that was part of what you "accepted" when you registered with the site. Part of doing business in the "internet enlightened" age.
