Weld Material Properies for Pressure Vessel Welding Application

03/30/2011 1:18 AM

hello sir/mam, i am doing a project on pressure vessel applications of hemispherical vessel with conical nozzle which store liquid oxygen in it. The material i am using for nozzle and shell is SA 516 Gr 70 steel. To weld the nozzle and shell of the same material, what type of weld material is to be used and the material properties of that material?

Refer drawings and WPS for the vessel you are making for required informations. If you do not have drawings and WPS then kindly do not attempt to make it.

SA 516 Gr 70 steel is carbon steel material used for pressure vessels but not suitable for liquid oxygen which is at cryogenic temperature (-183 degC). Vessels for liquid oxygen shall be made of double walled (jacketed) stainless steel with insulation (perlite/ vacuum or super insulation). For very large tanks for storing liquid oxygen, only outer shell can be made of SA 516 Gr 70 steel with perlite insulation between inner SS & outer CS shells.

no oxidation should be any where near LOX. my past experience was stainless vacuum jacketed pipe, valves, etc. i was designing all supports with stainless.

banu.....

Your liquid oxygen tank is a huge disaster waiting to happen.

Questions:

1) Is this the first tank you have ever designed ?

2) What is the design volume, your design pressure and temperature ?

3) Do you have a design code of construction for this tank....or are you just guessing about what to do next ? The design code of construction will provide information on welding and weld materials

I completely agree with the comments of the previous post....carbon steel is the wrong material for this tank.

Where will this tank be located ?

The recommended filler metals for welding of carbon steel material ASME SA-516 Grade 70 are:

• In case of SMAW process: use low hydrogen carbon steel electrodes ASME SFA-5.1, E7018 to be used in uphill direction.

• In case of SAW process: use filler metal of ASME SFA-5.17, electrodes EM12 & flux F7P2.
