How Many Washers Must Be Included in Bolted Connection for Steel Construction

03/30/2011 6:04 AM

Hi.

Is it necessary to put a washer under the bolt's head or it is necessary only under the nut?

Mentioned connections are designed for lattice towers.

If someone will give his advice I ask also to refer to any standard (USA or European).

Thanks in advance.

A washer is required under the turned element for A325 and A490 bolts here in the USA.

Per AISC Steel Manual washers are required under both the Hex Head bolt head and the nut....

It depends. See Section 6. "Use of Washers" in this standard.

Thanks for the link.

I have a snug tightened joints. And for them the rule is following:

6.1. Snug-Tightened Joints
Washers are not required in snug-tightened joints, except as required in Sections6.1.1 and 6.1.2.
6.1.1. Sloping Surfaces: .........
6.1.2. Slotted Hole: .........

As I have a usual case so I suppose that no washer is needed.

But it is strange for me that nothing is mentioned about lock-washers usage, and about simple washers under them. Also I didn't find information about lock-nuts.

Usually bolted connection of our towers include 1 nut, 1 lock-washer and 1 washer, or 1 nut, 1 lock-nut and 1 washer. But I don't find any standatd which will approve that we do it in a correct way.

"Specification for Structural Joints Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts" is giving rule for washers, but question is open for lock-washers and lock-nuts...

JUST BECAUSE A STANDARD DOES NOT ADD CERTAIN PARTS TO YOUR ASSEMBLY DOES NOT MEAN YOUR STRUCTURE WOULD NOT BENEFIT FROM IT. SOME TIMES YOU NEED TO GO ABOVE ANY BEYOND. ALTHOUGH I OVER ENGINEER MOST THINGS.

Article 23.1 of CSA S16-01 entitled "A 307 Bolts" states:

Nuts on A 307 bolts shall be snug-tightened. When so specified, nuts shall be prevented from working loose by the use of lock washers, locknuts, jam nuts, thread burring, welding or other methods approved by the designer.

These are the Locknuts used by the major tower builders in the UK.
