What technology or technique is available to determine wall thickness loss on a production line from an oil/gas well located in 3000' of water, and is approximately 19,000' below the sea floor? The well started pulling sand out of the formation in the production zone and has caused erosion in the line. The client must now determine the extent of the parent metal loss in the pipe. A smart pig cannot be used. Additionally, the line has an insulated coating.

Why a smart pig can't be used? It looks it is the right job for an UT pig.

I agree...that was the first suggestion. However, there is a major concern that because this is a production line from the well they will not have a means to launch or retrieve the pig effectively, and in fact might get the pig stuck or damage it upon retrieval if this proved to be possible. This is the first time that we have received such a request regarding this issue with these concerns. Apart from external radiography performed on the Riser from the surface to the sea floor, which would be capable of penetrating the insulating coating, it appears that the only other solution would be some form of internal UT testing utilizing a down hole tool. I do not believe that either ACFM or Guided wave UT would be a viable solution under these circumstances, but I am open to any suggestions. If we are able to develop a practical solution, it could be utilized on a large number of wells in domestic and international regions, and would create a new standard for addressing such concerns in the future. What is the diameter? Have you looked at using IRIS? Internal rotating inspection system? It utilizes UT.
