Fuel Island Control Contactors

03/30/2011 3:56 PM

I have a fuel island that loses power and has to be manually reset each time the complex generator fires up weekly under load to ensure power works properly.

Am looking for ways to have this fuel island power automatically reset after generator usage.

The emergency shutoff at the island controls a relay, which then controls the contactor coils providing fuel island power. When power is lost, or when generator power comes on under load to test the power system, or also when the emergency shutoff at the fuel island is pressed, the relay will power down all power to the fuel island. Under all the above conditions, power can only be restored manually by depressing a button.

Is there a way I could set up this control so that when power is lost and then restored, this relay would restore power to itself which would in turn restore power back to the fuel island (all the while maintaining that if someone depressed the emergency stop button, power could only be restored by manual reset?)

I believe that the system is designed to NOT be automatically reset especially when the e-stop has been pressed. Bypassing the hand reset could create a dangerous and/or deadly situation. Your insurance carrier would also have an issue with bypassing this safety feature.

As far as when the generator does its weekly exercise, you should be able to incorporate a UPS into the system behind the transfer switch on the branch leg that powers the fuel island.

I suspect you are getting the fuel island shut down during generator exercise because of a momentary loss of power when the transfer switch switches from normal to em power.

The fuel island was just rewired a few months ago, and never had this problem before the rewire.

The electrical outfit that installed the new system said it was possible to do what I had suggested above, but said since we never questioned at the time, they put in the manually reset contactors and relay.

So if there is a manual reset required only when e-stop is pushed, what can be done to maintain power during power glitches like the power lag waiting for a generator to start up or shut off?

Would some sort of a latching relay work in conjunction with the other relay?

Like I previously posted, install a UPS system behind the ATS on the leg that supplies power to the fuel island.

In my local, by passing a fuel island manual re-set is illegal.

Safest way to avoid gen start up/island shut down without altering the system control wiring is to install a UPS.

Good Luck

FYI - UPS = Uninterrupted Power Supply (basically an expensive AC battery bank) Available in many sizes/shapes/power ranges and available from many manufactures. This is the best solution to your problem, and deserves a GA.
