Necessities of Addressing the Issue of Environments in Public Forums?

03/30/2011 11:51 PM

So.. 'Experts' have already defined the problems we're facing because of unsustainable development.. and certain countries refuse to believe in those problems because implementing efforts against them might hurt them economically..
so why the need to address environmental issues in public forums for further discussion among undergrads, grads and scientists alike? - and how does it affect poverty, education, unemployment and security

Well, I guess if you believe that experts have defined those problems, and come up with solutions that are "unbiased", there is no need for any discussion.

I'm going to have to ponder and try to think if I've ever seen an unbiased solution to some problem--I think I'll be pondering for a while.

If is going to be a biased solution, you might want to get your $0.02 in so that the bias is not grossly to your detriment.

And, who knows, maybe your participation in the discussion can help create (an / the first?) unbiased solution.

Granted, discussing a solution doesn't solve a problem--appropriate action is then required. Maybe you can also help with the appropriate action?

A forum is a place for all voices to be heard. Although we take it for granted most of the time it's a gift. For centuries people have been killed for merely expressing a thought or belief.

You pointed out several social concerns on poverty, education, etc. That isn't why this forum exists. Engineers aren't politicians. Engineers rarely set policy. Engineers just look at a problem and try to improve on it.

but engineers are also social experimenters.. and key witnesses and advisors..

we play all of these roles.. professional ethics in engineering 101..
