Rubber Hardness Standard

03/31/2011 4:41 AM

We have customer request for Neoprene 30 Shore A, but I get from the material spec the hardness is Asker C. So,

1. Is Asker C and Shore A same

2. How many standard use in material hardness? As I know there was Shore A, D and 00, but some time we can get Shore C?

Thousand Thanks

This is from the Instron web site:

Shore test methods are defined in the following standards:

  • ASTM D-2240
  • DIN 53 505
  • ISO 7619 Part 1
  • JIS K 6301*
  • ASKER C-SRIS-0101

I couldn't find a ready conversion chart, you'll have to search.

"1. Is Asker C and Shore A same."

No Asker C is used on softer materials generally foam rubbers.

"2. How many standard use in material hardness?"

How many letters are in the alphabet? Asker and Shore are just for softer materials there are others. Like Rockwell which just about use all the alphabet to cover the various hardness in different materials.

On soft materials there generally is no cross. The durometer given is usually an average of several tests in one scale on the material. This is because soft materials are so forgiving.

The Asker C test is generally for materials too soft for a Shore A test
